Hiring Process
● COURAGE ● COMPASSION ● COLLABORATION ● COMMITMENT ●
To become a Norman Police Officer, applicants must successfully complete the following steps once their application is accepted (expand for more information):
-
When your application is accepted, you’ll receive an email containing an Employment Questionnaire (be sure to check your SPAM/JUNK folder). This will need to be completed to confirm you meet all of the qualifications. Once this is done, you will be scheduled for the physical and written exams.
-
The department's physical ability examination consists of three events: a trigger-pull assessment, a timed 500 meter row sprint (resistance set to 5) and a 1.5 mile run. Upon check-in, the first assessment will consist of pulling the trigger of a training handgun 6 times with each hand, with the weapon at eye level and arm extended.
The percentage scores from the row and run will be averaged for a total physical examination score. The score must be, at minimum, at the 45th percentile (35th for Laterals) to be considered a passing score. The scoring rubrics are provided below. For example: If you’re a 30-year-old male and complete the row in 2-minutes (58%), you’ll need to complete the run in 14:05 (32%). There will be a 10-minute break between events. All applicants are required to pass the department's physical ability exam to continue in the application process and take the written exam. Only one retest is permitted per hiring process, but not after the last exam date.
500 Meter Row Standards - All Applicants
-
Applicants who pass the physical exam will move onto the written exam on the same day. Norman PD does NOT charge applicants for this exam. Applicants must pass the Police Officer Selection Test with a score of 70% or higher.
You can purchase and download the Written Examination Study Guide and Practice Test from Stanard and Associates, Inc. HERE. This is the company we get the test from. If you run into any payment or technical issues, they can be reached at 312-553-0213. Another practice test can be found HERE at no cost, which contains similar questions.
-
Applicants who pass the physical and written exam will be requested to complete a thorough Personal History Statement (PHS) and will be scheduled to appear before a board consisting of members from the police department and human resources.
-
Applicants selected to proceed in the process will be scheduled for a polygraph examination. More information will be provided when contacted by the examiner.
-
Applicants that have successfully completed the above steps will be assigned to a background investigator. The investigator will conduct an extensive background investigation on your personal, family, financial, employment, and residential history. You may be asked to provide additional documents such as credit reports or training history.
-
Once applicants receive a conditional offer of employment, they must complete a psychological evaluation. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) or similar instrument will be administered by a licensed psychologist.
-
Applicants with conditional offers must also complete a medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing. The medical examination is required to be accepted in the Oklahoma State Police Pension and Retirement System. Once this is completed, the applicant will receive a final offer to attend the next police academy.
