To be eligible for a position as a Norman Police Officer, applicants must meet the following criteria:
✓ Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) eligible for employment.
✓ Age: Between 21 and 45 years old at the start of the academy, unless already enrolled in the state pension system.
✓ Education: Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate. College is preferred but not required.
✓ Driver’s License: Hold a valid driver’s license.
✓ Criminal Record: No felony or domestic violence convictions, including deferred sentences.
✓ Tattoos: No tattoos on the face, neck, or hands (small, ring-sized tattoos may be acceptable).
✓ Physical Fitness: Maintain excellent physical condition.

DISQUALIFIERS
Applicants will be disqualified if any of the following apply:
Chief’s Automatic Disqualifiers
Marijuana: Sale, production, or use of marijuana, marijuana metabolites, or THC products within one year prior to application (six months with a medical marijuana license).
Note: Marijuana use, whether medical or recreational, remains a violation under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, 21 U.S.C. §§ 801 et seq.
Prescription Medication: Unlawful use or sale of prescription medication within one year prior to application.
Recent Arrests: Arrested (with charges filed) for any crime within two years prior to application.
Impaired Driving: Arrested for any impaired driving offense within two years prior to application.
Controlled Substances: Unlawful use, sale, or production of any controlled dangerous substances (excluding marijuana or prescription drugs) within five years prior to application.
Brady List: Placement on a Brady list in any jurisdiction.
State Law Disqualifiers
In accordance with Oklahoma statutes 70 O.S. § 3311:
Criminal Convictions: Conviction of a felony, crime of moral turpitude, or domestic violence.
Deferred Sentences: Participation in a deferred sentence for a felony, crime involving moral turpitude, or domestic violence offense.
Mental Health: If found psychologically unfit for law enforcement within one year, or if currently undergoing treatment for a serious mental health condition that significantly impairs judgment or daily functioning.
Certification Issues: Revocation, suspension, or voluntary surrender of peace officer certification within five years.
Federal Law Disqualifiers
Applicants are disqualified under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) if they:
Have been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor.
Are unlawful users of controlled substances (ongoing or recent).
Have been convicted of a felony.
Are under a restraining order for harassment, stalking, or threats toward an intimate partner or their child.
Have been adjudicated as mentally defective or committed to a mental institution.
Are in the U.S. illegally or here on a nonimmigrant visa.
Were dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces.
Are fugitives from justice.
Have renounced U.S. citizenship.
