The Norman Police Department offers numerous specialized teams and units within the agency.

Special duty assignments allow officers to further discover certain talents and specialized areas of law enforcement.

 

Bike Team

This part-time opportunity allows officers to attend special events, close interaction with citizens, and respond to emergencies with more mobility.

Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU)

Formally known as the ‘Bomb Squad,’ this unit conducts all investigations into reports of devices or materials that could be hazardous in nature.

Criminal Investigations

Detectives specialize in investigating crimes against persons and crimes against property. These investigations can range from a vehicle break-in to a homicide case.

K9

This team locates subjects and evidence at or near crime scenes and provides protection and backup for officers when possible and practical.

Field Training Officer (FTO)

After graduating the police academy, officers are assigned to FTO’s for 16 weeks of field training. FTO’s are experienced officers who train and evaluate new officers.

School Resource Officer (SRO)

In partnership with the Norman Public School District, SRO’s are focused on enhancing the safety and security of students and staff.

Firearms Instructor

Experts in firearms training, these instructors are responsible for keeping officers proficient with their firearms while maintaining safety.

Defensive Tactics Instructor

These instructors are responsible for training officers on how to safely use force when necessary.

Law Enforcement Driving Tactics Instructor (LEDT)

LEDT instructors are responsible for training officers how to safely drive in emergency responses and vehicle pursuits.

Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT)

Responsible for the investigation of collisions that result in fatalities and/or critical injuries.

Drone Team

NPD’s newest team provides a birds-eye-view for officer safety and various scenarios including search & rescue and crime scene mapping.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team

This elite team conducts tactical operations to peacefully resolve incidents that cannot be resolved by conventional police methods.

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)

This vital team provides support to officers and leaders in the field regarding mental health issues.

Crisis Negotiations

Part of the SWAT team, negotiators are trained to speak with subjects during a critical event or crisis.

Honor Guard

This noble team presents our nation’s flag at events and renders honors to our fallen responders who have given the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting.

Technical Investigator (TI)

These officers respond to calls such as burglaries or domestic violence. They specialize in taking crime scene photos and collecting evidence. This is a vital skill to have in the field.

Proactive Policing/ Street Crimes Unit

These officers specialize in investigating local problems and organized crime. They can identify issues and help formulate a plan to solve them.

Physical Fitness Instructor

Officers wishing to maintain a physical fitness routine may be eligible to instruct workouts at the academy.

Special Operations Section

These detectives avert criminal activity by working in a covert manner and utilizing specialized training and resources.

Traffic Enforcement

Officers on the traffic team are primarily responsible for educating drivers and enforcing traffic laws to reduce violations and collisions on public roads.
